Friday Night at the Cheeseboard
I didn't actually eat at the Cheeseboard this past week, but I did walk by Friday evening and was inspired to take the above video. The Cheeseboard is one reason I love living in Berkeley and especially in the "gourmet ghetto."
What makes the Cheeseboard so special? In the first place it's a co-op, owned by the workers....in other words, communist! Yes, Lenin lives in Berkeley!
Secondly, they have live music by amazingly good muscians, mostly blues and rock but I've heard reggae and salsa there as well.
Third reason: the Cheeseboard only serves one type of vegetarian pizza every day. Friday is was "Fresh corn, Chile pasilla, Onions, French feta, Mozzarella, Mexican key limes, Cilantro, and Garlic olive oil."
The pizza is always so good I seldom bother reading their chalkboard menu but if you need to know ahead of time you can following them on twitter @cheeseboard. They send out just one tweet every morning, which is, you probably guessed it, the topping for that day's pie.
Here's today's tweet:
The finaly reason the Cheeseboard is so special is it is not just pizza. The Cheeseboard is two side-by-side store fronts--the second one sells the best selection of cheeses you can get in Berkeley (plus, the worker-communist staffers really know their cheeses) and they also bake fresh baked rolls and pastries which people line up for in the morning.
I eat a slice of Cheeseboard pizza, plus one of their small tossed salads, about once a month but I walk by almost every day and it always makes me smile.
The single best meal I had this week was just a simple sandwich, the "Spicy Hog" sandwich at Southie, which if you don't know, is the sandwich shop next door to, and owned by Wood Tavern on College Avenue in Rockridge. The pork was perfectly cooked, tender and juicy and the coleslaw spicy and just slightly sweet.
I sat at the counter and watched chef Morgwn Jones prepare other amazing sandwiches including a roast beef sandwich that was almost as tall as the ones they make at New York's Carnegie Deli and a wonderful marinated artichoke and arugula sandwich on a torpedo roll (which you would never find in New York).
At night, Southie serves a completely different dinner menu and since you can almost never get into Wood Tavern, it gets plenty of business from the overflow. Highly recommended.
The most fun evening I had this past week was at the Memphis Barbecue Wednesday night at T-REX. The new chef, Ryan Lafferty, is determined to make T-REX the "best place for barbecue in the world." He's got his work cut out for him, but the guy really knows barbecue and T-REX has never been this good before.
Next Wednesday there will be a "Texas Barbecue" special at T-REX and like this past Wednesday it will be all you can eat for $19. And it will be great!
Thursday night was also special. Jackie and I went to Lalime's where we had a fabulous seafood dinner, highlighted by Sand Dabs and the best Alaskan salmon I've had this season. Everytime I eat one of Brian White's prix fixe dinners I think it is his best ever and then then somehow he always tops himself.
Lalime's has a prix fixe dinner every Thursday and Friday, usually focused on seafood. If you like to get on their mailing list (and that of T-REX and other K2 restaurants) you can do so by clicking here.
The other great meal I had this past week was a late night snack at Adesso, a fun bar scene where they make their own charcuterie. At some point in the near future I going to write a more extensive article about Adesso, because I love it!
But, that's it for now. I'm meeting some friends at Paisan, where they just started a breakfast centered around housemade pastries and Blue Bottle Coffee and I'm never late, that's just not my style.
